Eugene A. Evans, retired high school teacher and leader of the Berkeley Sea Scouts for 35 years, sued the City of Berkeley for infringing on the Boy Scout’s right to ban gay members. Now he’s been arrested on 19 felony counts of sexually assaulting young males in the troops he led.
I’m not a religious sort, but this quote from the Bible seems apropos:
Matt 7:2-5 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?
Which is exactly why, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to become less and less judgmental of others. Lord knows I’ve got a plank or two in my own eye.
It’s unfortunate that many of chief offenders of this simple platitude from the Bible tend to be bible-thumping Christians. I’m willing to bet that Mr. Evans was a fervent churchgoer.
